Hi all, just got back from my mot, she failed because the right hand brake light dosnt work when the side/headlights are on. Both work fine when the side/headlights are off. As you know, the rear lamps and brake lights use the same bulb, and lookng at the rear lamps with just the side/headlights on, the right hand one is alot brighter than the left hand one, which increases in brightness when the brake pedal is pressed. Basically, the right hand brake light is acting as though the brakes are permanently on, at it's full brightness, where as the left one gets brighter when the brake pedal is pressed. It's not the bulb, I've swapped the round and the same thing happens in the right hand side. Could it be the brake light switch or a relay? Thanks for any help.

Check and clean the earth points to the lights. Lucky it is the RH light as the LH has the petrol tank in the way.

Cool, I'll try that and see if it helps :) Yeah it does help that I don't have to move the fuel tank!

If you don't get it working, and need some help, you could come over to Boston to see me thursday evening. Bit of a trek but the offer is there if required - PM me.

faults like this are nearly always a dodgy earth at the rear lights

L400RAS Cheers for the help offer, I'd love to pop over but I can't risk that long a journey with no mot or tax :-

I'm gonna strip and clean all the earths when my dad gets home and unlocks the workshop :) Hope that's all it is... I'll you know how it goes.

Haha figured it out... After an hour and abit testing every earth in sight and getting rather oily, I was still stumped, so I took out the contacts in the bulb holder, messed around with them and put them back and it worked! Turns out all it was was that the contacts in the bulb holder were in the wrong way around ;) Glad it's sorted!
