I have fitted a 1275 spi in my old mini.

I seem to recall a thread I read on how the wiring is Modified. But the search came up blank

My plan is to fit a exhaust mount bobbin on the inner wing to replace the solenoid and provide the conection to the fusebox.

I have taken the SPI loom out of the spares box, looked at it, got confused and threw it back in. :fear:

I guess I need to use a relay to cope with the current draw? for the Pre-engaged starter am I right? or can I just extend the solenoid wire round

What Amp fuse would I need to feed it all.

Converting from intertia to pre-engaged is not that difficult, this is how I did it, so I was still able to return to intertia when the engine went back in (grotbag)

First remove the battery, you will need a relay ( if you have the spi loom, you should be able to nick the one from there ) and a length of 25/30 amp wire and some spade connectors and a couple of ring connectors...

First, leave the old solenoid on the wing, it makes for a uesful junction box, but connect the old lead from the starte side to the motor directly to the battery terminal. This is then routed to the terminal on the solenoids ontop of the pre engaged starter.

The white/red wire ( from ignition barrel ) need to be routed to the relay which you are intserting, and then grounded on the other terminal ( connect the relay near to the earth point on the LHS of the engine bay on the x-member ) the take some of the 25/30 amp wire and connect on to the battery terminal on the old solenoid, and then to the relay, and take the output from the relay to the solenoid on the starter motor.

That's got the starter sorted.

If you have ballast ignition there will have been a yellow/white wire connected to the old solenoid, this needs to be connected to the spare tag on the pre-engaged starter solenoid.

Reconnect battery and start car !

Great! Thanks for that Guessworks.

Will have a crack at it just now.

Thanks also for the Forum CD I got it in the post last week.

Cheers
