Hi guys

I was reading Tim Mundy's performance manual and he has a small topic about swapping to an MG Metro and he lists all things you have to change.

To quote, "Thermostat housing needs to be changed for a Mini item"

Question, Which thermostat housing do I have to change to? or can I get away with using the original and getting a different sized pipe? as I have realised the outlet hole is bigger.

Cheers, Kelvin

You just need this and blank off the little hole in the alloy pipe.

The bottom deck of the thermostat housing may be at a different angle to a mini one but I don't know if you can get a pipe on. Mini lower and upper housings are readily available if you need to change them.

The most difficult part is getting the bolts out as they tend to rust up and may snap.

Hello Kerrin.

Thanks for that, do these lower housings change the angle of the upper housing?

If I'm ok to use the MG Metro thermostat housing, then which hose do I need? will a standard 1275 hose work but with the larger outlet hole as kerrin has put up

Cheers!

Mine has a 1275 top hose with a standard metro housing. You need to block off the expansion bottle overflow obviously.

By the angle of the hose, I meant that it points more towards the radiator than the mini lower housing but not much.

The hose link I put up is the hose fitted to the carb coopers, which had pretty much MG metro engines fitted, it will go straight onto the metro thermo housing and the mini radiator.

might be of some help, used standard top hose and just a small plumbing job to connect the bottom thermostate collar to the inlet manifold. bottom hose also standard.
what i found that if you dont use both parts of the thermosate housing it suffered with a bad air lock in the top hose, it lower than the top of the radiator. hope that makes sense

Cheers for the help guys, I'll order one of those hoses now!

Just slightly confused as to why Tim Mundy says that the Metro thermostat housing must be changed for a Mini item?

The mini one is exactly the same, but the thin outlet pipe is not drilled, as there is no expansion bottle or whatever it is used for.

Hence on a metro housing you need to block it off, the metro ones seem to be cheaper at mini spares.

The Metro type Thermostat Housing was only used on the RSP (Carb Cooper) after they went to injection they were the same as the other mini's and used the standard diameter hose.
