Hi guys i'm after a bit of help with my 1380 fast road engine build. After fitting a kent md286 cam and minisport 1.5:1 ratio roller rockers i have discovered that the valve springs are compressing so much that i can barely fit a 4 thou feeler between the coils at full lift. So my question is where can i get a set of 200lb double valve springs that will be suitable for the job and have the corect gap between the coils of around 30 thou?

Any help appreciated

Thanks, Nathan

Could you put a shim under the rocker posts?

I've had to use spacers under the rockers to get them the right height anyway and that hasn't made any difference.

Its the springs themselves which are compressing too much because they are not the correct type for a high lift cam + rockers. Minisport and Minispares both sell double valve springs but none say whether they are suitable for my engine setup.

Has anybody else had problems like this?

You don't need such high pressure springs - a 1380 will not be a high revving engine...... I would get rid of the high ratio rockers - little gain for much trouble.....

Hiya,

best thing to do is take a valve spring off, reassemble the valve top cap and collents on the head and check the space for the spring,

IIRC on the minispares site they quote fitted lengths for their springs, see ig your gap is close to these fitted lengths.

Its a long time ago now but I hd a look at a head for somone which had a similar issue, I think the problem was that they had S valves from a AEG163 head fitted to a 12g940 (maybe the otherway round)

Don't run the engine till you get more clearance on the springs!!! Seriously - these high ratio rockers are just more trouble than they are worth...... Your cam is already quite high lift and it will work well on standard rockers - preferably the pressed steel (or forged) ones and not the silly sintered ones.......

Thirded on the high lift rockers. No use on anything higher lift than a MG Metro cam.

I love my high lift rollers, made a MASSIVE difference.

These are what I used on my 1330, scatter 296 and 1.5 rollers.

Make sure youfeed the feelers in from the side and not from the front as well when checking the clearence (:

Are your springs fitted to the correct height? This is very important.
Speak to Swiftune and get a set of springs and top caps off them - I personally recommend these springs as I use them at well over 9,000 rpm.
Ask what the fitted height should be (I cant remember off the top of my head) and be very accurate when fitting them

Don't worry mate its going to be a while before the engine can be run :D

Theres so many opinions of roller rockers and to be honest i've bought them now, it would be a waste not to use them.

I'll check the total valve lift later on and find out if the ones minispares sell will be suitable.

Thanks guys :D

Dont use Minispares springs. I tried them and they were crap. As I said before - check the fitted height - if thats correct you will not get coilbind
