Hi
I'm going to cut the roof off my mini (when I get it) & possibly fit a flip front , (done the roof bit before)
I will be reinforcing the floor etc , as you would expect , and make the back end into a pickup
It will be a short wheelbase open top pickup with a flip front (unless I find a mini with a very good front end)
http://www.businessl...n_Fees_0410.pdf
I'm assuming I will get a mot - then phone them up for a voluntary inspection
I've no problem with them inspecting the car - I have to abide by their rules ... but ...
If I get a Q plate - can I then get a cheap private plate ? - to overcome the qplate ?
I'm assuming the crushing is to do with tax avoidance / dangerous vehicles
or are they crushing non standard vehicles ?
If so , there wont be many custom car shows ?

Just looked on the site - and it's not obvious what I should do

I don't want to make a car then get it crushed >_<

Moved as requested ;0)

Once a Q plate always a q plate, you can't change it. Not sure what you mean by crushing?

There are a few things you need to do for the IVA: http://www.transport.....0April 09.pdf

You'd need to fit a collapsable steering column as part of those requirements. Once you've finished the build I think you need to contact VOSA about getting an IVA.

I don't know why you think you need a collapable steering column?

It is quite clear that any test of a modified vehicle would be a test of the modifications only. Any OEM parts used in their original way pass by default.

Thanks for starting the new topic,

As I understand it, your build would end up on a non transferable Q plate. The only way to avoid a Q plate with a self build is a "Kit Conversion" where you rebuild one car with a brand new Kitcar body/chassis, like turning an old Ford into a Lotus 7 lookalike. The emphasis is on you to prove that's what you've done so you need a "dossier" full of receipts and photos. That would get you new registration number showing the same year as the donor car, though I don't think you can transfer that either .

I suppose, if you're intent on avoiding the Q, the next question is what constitutes a kit for a kit conversion, and can you make your own. I don't know the answer, but it would be interesting to find out.

If he takes his modified mini for an IVA test, then they test everything to todays IVA regulations and that means collapsable steering wheel and all. They do not just test modifications only, and OEM parts do not pass by default, only oem parts that pass todays IVA regulations will be acceptable

Anyway I'm sure Bungle will be along soon

Thanks for all the replies
after reading the IVA inspection manual (bits of it)
I have come to the conclusion I should score 9 points - based on this ...
http://webarchive.na...cle/DG_10014199
But I will be using a modified shell - so the points mean nothing in my case ???
the whole think seems to be a contradiction of it's self
The EU wants us to drive around identical easily taxable boxes with no soul
wonder how top gear gets around these rules ???
