The colour of the pinion is unimportant, the tooth count is..

Assuming everything on the car is original, wheel size, engine/final drive and speedometer then you should have a 7/17 speedo worm/pinion combination, however if you have a 5 tooth worm installed then this will produce a similar condition to what you are suggesting, speedo reading 20 when travelling @ 30 mph.

From what ive read on google briefly am i right in thinking this was standard drive gear in a pre 1980's engine which would also mean that it should be on 10's not 12"s?

well do I feel like mini Alec has driven a BMW mini up my rear end! we were asked to sort his speedo troubles out on a budget! after others failed (no one on here) and that we did, at one point because he told us he did not want to spend a lot we were going to hand the mini back to him, after reading the tales about the car on here, and how it had been attempted before.
As soon as we put the mini in the ramp and looked under it, the rags were out it leaked oil from every possible point! all new fresh oil, the car needed a medical drip keep it topped up, so alarm bells started to ring, we advised him that the only way to sort the speedo problem was for us to separate the engine from the gear box to count the crown wheel and pinion etc so we had to take the engine out, so while we were splitting the engine and gear box we would change every oil seal and gasket anyway, again how stupid were we? now I have received email after email about this car since we handed it back, I feel like I have walked into a mine field but after reading all the posts about the car it looks as if we were set up!, I should have told him to go to kwik fit to sort his mini out! when we lifted the engine out of the car, the block looked like pebbles and bam bam had split the block before us, it leaked from every where, the underside of the mini will never rust due to the 20/50 coating on it randomly splashed every where by every moving part and the wind.
now what? we have sorted his speedo drive troubles as he requested! and changed every gasket / oil seal as you do when going to the trouble of splitting a lump, handed the car back with smiles and some of our time paid for, job done!
No now the emails have started saying it still leaks! no phone call or a personal visit just emails in the evening letting us know it still leaks! well in a nut shell, we were paid for the speedo drive to be done, I foolishly mentioned the leaks and that if he wanted the speedo sorting we would also while we were there change every gasket and seal in the hope all the leaks were rectified, he also claims the brakes are poor??? even though they are servo brakes and in order to remove an engine all we do it split the master cylinder from the servo unit and place it on the scuttle out of the way of the engine? (easy to do due to the lenght of the two pipes.
He is asking for money back and the problems sorting! in my opinion looking at all his posts he is attempting to rip us off in order to try to sell the mini again! because he was not successful with the last sale attempt!

he now has the CAB involved! and tonight threatened us with Trading standard as well as denying any other people have tried to repair his mini proir to us solving his speedo problem!

so mini alex go back to the CAB and alter what you have told them or rethink what you are saying but keep in mind all the emails we have exchanged your own words typed have proved it to me.

please every one reading this tell us both your thoughts but also have a read of all his topics before letting us know your feelings! that way is it fair!
