My mini is a 1993 1275cc carb with electronic ignition.

I know this has been asked a few times and i've used the search facility, but not had much joy with it. I haven't got a Haynes manual either :D

My coil wiring was butchered by the previous owner and i'm trying to sort it out. One of the connections was bodged onto the terminal and it split (the terminal). I've managed to get my hands on a 12v coil, is this the right one? If not, can I use the terminal?

I'm also unsure which of the four wires goes where.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is some difference I believe if it has a ballast resistor but someone will put you right. My car '92 1275(now on megajolt) but the coil is beside me waiting to go to the ebay buyer and is wired as follows .Negative terminal(also marked RUP) has the white wire with a black tracer to the dizzy snap on type connector and also has the tacho wire BOTH OF WHICH have MALE spades on the wires. The POSITIVE also marked BAT has the thicker white wire to the dizzy snap on connector and a switched live from the ignition, BOTH OF WHICH have FEMALE spades on the wires. hth ,Toby

Depends what type of electronic ignition I believe.....but normally it would be a 9 volt coil. Internal impedance ~ 2.2 Ohms.

this is a ducellier coil and says 12V. You best start at the beginning and lay all the plugs on the head or somewhere they get a good ground with the leads attached! and crank it over to see if they all spark. If so then determine the leads are on the right plugs when fitted ,hopefully they have been marked appropriately if you dont know how to do that.Trouble with points- less systems is that you cant do a static check to ascertain the timing is right.so you'll just have to try moving the dizzy around a bit. If it wont at least fire when you have tried it in all positions and you know its sparking then its probably not ignition causing no start

Thanks again pigeonto. What confuses me is that it was working fine this morning. I thought it'd be best to change the connections and then when I hooked it back up it didn't fire up, but it cranks over.

I'll have a look this morning. One thing I forgot to say was that when I reconnected the coil it worked for about 10 seconds and then conked out and wouldn't fire back up

Once you ascertain if its sparking you'll be better able to go through all the basics and get there. Never done so, but I think that if you send battery voltage up the wrong side of a coil it destroys them.and if that happened the dizzy would have had the same voltage to it too. Just clutching at ideas dont want to spoil your day! See if it sparks. We're off on a Mini run now and I hope to hear its running later.

Ah, man. I've had another play and there's no spark when I hold the plug up to the cylinder head bolts and turn the engine over :) Does this mean that my coil and dizzy are pooped? I've got to take the garage tomorrow for repairs as well. Seriously stressy.

How bizarre. Just had another play and it sprung into life! There must be a loose connection somewhere. Another potential issue that has crossed my mind is that I may have flooded the engine. The constant in/out process of the garage (with the choke on) may have flooded it over time.
