I removed some by breaking the trumpet. I was fitting hilo's anyway so a chisel and lump hammer on the trumpet did the trick.

Not Good !!!

First off I'd Beg,steal or borrow another compression tool. Make sure it's the right one for your cones. Most by now will be metric but the original ones where a different thread. Then I'd apply liberal amounts of grease to the rod end and see if you can start it in the cone. Go carefully and do not force it !!. tighten a quarter of a turn then back it off, then tighten again . If it goes really tight take the rod out and apply more grease. The rod should be good for 7 or 8 turns. YOU NEED TO BE CONFIDENT THE ROD HAS A GOOD HOLD ON THE CONE before attempting to compress it . If you get this far do not just wind the cone up take it slowly a turn at a time. Each time check to see if the trumepet is loose. I'd stay well clear of putting my hand anyhere inside the trumpet housing. If that mother lets go you'll do yourself a serious injury. If you get the trumpet loose I'd use some pliers or grips to free the knuckle end and then pull the trumpet clear. Get the tension off the cone and say a prayer.

I'd be very concerned about cutting the trumpet whilst the cone is still in there

I had a problem with mine also, the nut on the top end wouldn't budge. Spoke to Minispares and I think they may have had a dodgy batch.

Sent it back two weeks ago, still waiting for a refund though :P

Yes car jacked up shock absorber off so top arm could drop as far as poss.
trumpet split in two, removed the bottom bit with ball joint on, and then other broken bit came out.

Just watch your eyes

If your changing the cones, chances are they are worn anyway, The cone is up inside the turret, so is most of the trumpet, the top arm is fixed, so wearing googles I used a foot long chisel so hands so no where near. Nothing flew off
And if the cone thread is also shot he hasn't got many options, a new compressor wont work on a cone with a stripped thread

I have had to cut a trumpet out while the doughnut was in place.......no other choice as the nut on the spring went BANG and pulled right through while under pressure.
If the car is jacked up the spring will not be under as much load. I drilled/chiseled/banged away at it with no dramatic result.....( but do be careful and don't be sticking your hand in there )
Unfortunate that a trumpet goes to waste...but at least you're replacing with adjustables.

It is very easy and safe to cut the alloy trumpet in half with an electric sabre saw/ recipricating saw.
