I wouldn't go any more that a 276 for the road
Loose a bit at the top end but gain a lot mid range I've found
just my opinion

I have a 276 in mine and its good, bit lumpy below 1500 revs but very driveable

Think you'll find the lumpyness is down to ignition timing being too retarded at low revs.if its just a trackday toy then 286, RacerPete built a 998 with a 286 and I think he loved it

Plenty of advance down there and she'll tick over like a baby

PhillipGCaldwell: You shouldnt have that issue when your megajolt is fitted with a decent map in place

Unless you're running a huge and I mean huge ££££ spec motor a cam that heavy would be a waste. As already said a 276 would be as much as I'd like to use on a 998.

If its just gonna be a trackday weapon then give it a go, but for road use its gonna be a pig to use.

286 will rev but you will have to rev it to get any power. Bigger isnt always better, the motor will be very lumpy below 3000 and maybe higher.
It will use gallons of fuel as well,......... MG cam is good up to a higher state of tune than you would think
If you have big valves and a ported head with HIF 44 you can actually loose power over a well ported head with standard valves and an inch and a half carb.
Very tricky this tuning lark, dont make any sense sometimes.

How low final drive?
Give you an example.
I once ran an 1100 clubman which was standard and had a 3.6 diff
My mate had a tweaked 1275 with a 3.4 diff
My 1100 was quicker getting away and was faster on the motorway.
