Question: How do you measure the tightness of a left hand thread? I need to remove both rear hubs to replace the studs on them for longer ones, and the left had side is a left thread.
My Draper Torque wrench allows use in both directions, ie do up, and un do, my Halfords one only allows traditional "do up" direction.
I am sure my Draper tool does not click on traditional "un do" which will I guess be "doing up" the left hand side. It does click on the normal "do up" way.
So just wanted to know how to measure it, as its quite a key part I will be removing!
Richard.

Does your halfords one not have a push through ratchet ?

Just looked at it has a small circlip holding the drive on - assume this is the bit i need to reverse?

no - usually the 1/2" bar where the socket slides onto will push through to the other side...

Nope, its like a solid wheel / grip on one side, with a 1/4" drive on other. It only go to 44LBS - assume the rear axle nut it maybe 60+ lbs?
Might look at hiring one for the job. Or just do it up FT!!

Just for reference - quite a lot of torque wrenches just won't do left hand threads. I've got a Draper and a Teng click type that won't despite being the ratchet type and the ratchet mechanisms are reversible. I've got a much older Draper that has a dial to show the current torque being applied and that has a 3/8" square sticking out both ends of the head so it'll work in either direction.
Then there's my Britool torque wrench..... It's not a ratchet and the 1/2" square will push through the head to torque things in either direction. It's of a size that's more usually seen tightening the wheel-nuts on buses and artics. Ideal for the front hub-nuts though.

Torque wrenches should never be used to "undo" anything.... as it screws up the calibration.

Yep, indeed, I have an old knackered Draper wrench I use as a breakder bar undo helper. The Halfords one only allows one way tightening, unless you take the drive out and put it on the other way, that I discovered yesterday.
I also read somewhere when not in use to slacken them right off to maintain accuracy etc.
