Hi peeps i have a 92 sprite and also have some later Mpi rear seat belts i would like to fit instead of the naff static items, please can someone send me a couple of pics of the position of the rear seat belt reels so i know where they fit to.

Or if anyone has any info on how they have done this conversion and where you have installed them to, i have looked at putting them in the original rear static belt position but the reel dose not want to play ball. and my next option is to put them on the rear shelf as the reel retracts from this position.

many thanks

I noticed yesterday that my rear bins are no longer connected, so I can take some pics of this! Do you need to see the actual mount for the reel, or just its position. I can take some better ones in to the companion bin if needed.

The reels are attached to the rear wheel inner arch on a bracket, you will need to salvage that bracket from a MPi to fit the belts...

Positioning the reel anywhere else is not recommended, especially on the parcel shelf which is not strong enough to take the shock load in case of accident.

These reels are unique, no other manufacturer makes one that operates at the same mounting angle and none of the seatbelt manufacturers today are interested in remanufacturing the Mini rear reels. I've tried to source replacements or get them assembled by specialists and nobody wants to get involved. They only work reliably at the intended mounting angles and as such you should use the correct bracketry as John says above. If they are mounted off angle they will lock up at the wrong time under acceleration, braking or cornering and may not lock up when you need them to. When mounted and at rest, the pendulum of a seatbelt needs to be in a neutral position (this is internal and you can't see it so don't try looking). If its offset in any direction while at rest, it will be inclined to operate at the wrong times.

thanks for the pictures mate they were very helpful, is there a bracket i can purchase to weld onto the rear arch so that i can fit into position or is it best to get these?

thanks for the help guys you have saved me as i was going to fit them to the parcel shelf with reinforcing plates welded in to help take the load in the event of an accident.

Once again thanks for your help.

IMHO it is never best to buy Securon belts. They are cheaply made garbage and don't last. The multi angle retractor is probably too big to fit in the bin anyway.

You can use the parcel shelf if you want, but find a picture of how much reinforcement Rover had to add to be able to do that on the Cabrio, it's immense.

The brackets are not available separately, you'll have to get some from a scrapper.

Actually thinking about it they might come on MPi rear arch repair panels which wouldn't be disasterously expensive. Although these brackets and belts were introduced prior to MPi spec, they are kind of referred to as an MPi part.
