Just done an engine rebuild and the unit is back in the car.

I've just spent the week trying to get to the bottom of a starting problem and when diagnosing fuel I took the line from the pump to the carb off, and the car started. Put the line back on and it runs ok, but refuses to start after being turned off and then replacing the line. Take the fuel line off and it starts straight away.

My feeling is the carb is flooding ( a single SU HIF Carb on a 1275 engine. Nothing special otherwise) but all I did was change the pump for one from a respected supplier.

MY THOUGHTS
Pump pressure. Could be. But how do I test it, and given the pump came from a well known supplier I'd like to think not.

Carb. My achiles heel of mechanics. Stripped this bad boy down and rebuilt it myself, but every time I get into Carbs my head melts.

Any help would be gratefully recieved.

Why did you strip the carb down ????? Sure you haven't put the fuel hose on the wrong connection on the carb by mistake?

OOps. My fault in the initial post. I didn't strip the carb, only the engine. Happy I'm on the right connections. Closest to bulk head - fuel in. Middle - float chamber vent (disconnected at the mo until I can fault find). Closest to front of car crankcase fumes input - blocked this off.

Really struggling to get to the bottom of this.

its possible that the carb is now running way to rich. the old pump may have been on its last legs and the carb was set on the rich side to compensate. now that you have a new pump the carb is way too rich and is flooding the engine
