Hi there, i have a 1991 Studio 2, ive had it about 4 weeks now with no problems until yesterday, the revs started dropping and it started coughing and spluttering. I though it may just have been temporary but became intermittent and is now a permenant feature. Basically it starts up ok but when im going through the gears 3rd into 4th particularly when the revs are up it basically starts spluttering and it cuts out, now i had the recovery truck come out but he couldnt find anything wrong with it (apart from the exhaust blowing) and a little oil needed in the carb ( which i did when home ) I took it to Thornton Mini Spares in Bradford today but they said it could be anything and to leave it until it gets worse ;D, i need this sorting asap so if anyone could help it would be great, Thanks

Kids today, can't wait a few hours.

Well, if its spluttering, check the plugs. Being a later car I go no idea if it uses points and condenser but I'd swap them out anyway (total of the two parts is £5-10, I change mine every 6 months).

Could also try checking all the pipes for air leaks.

So in order.

1) Check all the pipes / car / magic system fuel gets into engine for air leaks or split pipes.
2) Check the colour of the plugs, see if its running rich / lean or if the plugs are FUBAR
3) Try changing points and condenser if you got them, they can go funny from time to time.

Check the earth strap from bulkhead to engine hasn't frayed through. this will cause a problem when the engine moves like when changing gear.

Does it cut out and stop or momentarily cut out ?

Sorry its just i need this fixing asap. Anyway Pipes are fine checked them all no leaks or splits or anything, plugs are practically brand new and colour is spot on, the guy at the garage mentioned the points and condenser but wouldnt do it till its practically stopped :) havent checked the earth strap will have a look as soon as, where abouts is it though ( first car/mini ) and it coughs and slows down but if i give it gas it tries to pick up but then slowly cuts out if that makes sense.

Sounds like fuel starvation but points and condenser wouldn't go amiss

Condenser will show up as lack of power when given the boot and backfire in extreme circumstances when condenser almost gone.
It will run on a light throttle but refuse when the foot is put down.

Earth strap is by the clutch cylinder on bulkhead drivers side I think.

Could be dirty filter in carb could be allsorts..

Ah the condenser sounds feasable as when it does start to splutter if i come off the throttle it picks up again, does that sound possible ? Please dont say it could be allsorts :) had a very similair problem with my motorbike ending up spending a very hefty amount of some fixing literally everything and it still had the same problem

Points + Condeser, its £7 from a local part shop to find out. If it's not, then you've gotten one possible cause out the way.

Also worth a look - check the low tension leads tot he coil - they sometimes wear and are only held on by a couple of strands of wire. I have had this problem before and ended up stripping back some wire after cutting the Lucar connectors off, opening them up and reconnecting. I closed them up with pliers but there is a special tool which is effectively an expensive pair of pliers.

I had this problem for months and had the car rolling road tuned to no effect and eventually it started playing up out in the Peak District at night - no street lighting. When I lifted the bonnet I could see the faintest spark jumping from LT lead to coil.

The car ran perfectly (or thereabouts) after I had rewired the connectors.
