Model: 998cc HLE. Standard Engine.
Year: 1982 (Y)

Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Hi all. Our "Mags" is giving cause for concern again, having just passed her MOT, had new front sub frame mounts fitted, rear brakes adjusted, exhaust clamp re-sealed at manifold...all for under £300, she was in the good books. Alas though, she has come away with the same problem she had before MOT. Fumes in car when windows are open. Not sure if theyre engine fumes or burning/rubbing fumes. She has wider whels on but they were on long before this problem started.

Having got her MOT i eliminated exhaust blowing from my thoughts, and fitted a new fan belt knowing that theo ld one had seen better days. But no good, same smell with a nicely tensioned brand new fan belt fitted. I've also recently fitted a new pipe that goes from carb to emissions canister on right hand side of engine as this was pershed and i hoped this would sort the problem.
Mags runs lovely, but has not had a major overhaul in her current life, so experts at work suggest it could be many things along the lines of "gasket/seals" related.
Tappet covers on reverse of engine perhaps?

I'm out of ideas gang. hope you can help.
Marty on behalf of Claire & Mags The Mini.

If it's worst when the windows are open then it's by far the most likely to be exhaust fumes. When moving withthe windows open air is drawn out of the interior and results in a slight pressure drop in the car which will draw any fumes from under the bonnet or immediately behind the car in.

Since you've already had a problem with the exhaust sealing I'd suggest that's probably where the problem is. Stick your hand over the tailpipe with the engine running. If the exhaust is sealed then you shouldn't be able to form a seal (or if you can the car should stall). If you can seal the tailpipe with your palm then the exhaust is leaking.

Another possibility is a leak from the fuel tank or pipes that go thruogh the floor in the boot. Again with the windows down fumes from inside the boot would be drawn into the interior. An easy test for this though is to open the boot after it's been sat for a while - if it's a fuel leak in there then it will be very fumey in the boot. It only takes a tiny amount of petrol to create a huge amount of fumes (which is no bad thing). I'm guessing you would have noticed this though and mentioned it so my money is on the exhaust.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your advice. Her boot rubber was replaced not that long ago. We are going to go down the exhaust route and take a look at her this weekend. I have driven her into work today and she is deffo still smelling, so bad it makes me cough.

We will update you after the weekend.

Seal the boot with masking tape, got to be worth a try. How about the vent pipe on the petrol tank too?
