Hello

I went and had a look at a 1976 project mini the other night that had been off the road since 1997. It still had the old style blue log book and had never been sorn. Would this cause any issues to me or the present owner if I was to buy it? I don't want the guy to suddenly recieve a load of fines for never declaring in sorn. He was unsure but thinks it didn't need sorning as it was off the road before the sorn law came in?

Any ideas?

Cheers, Dave :D

think you can still get away without declaring sorn? from what the dvla told me it's once it goes onto the sorn system then you have to keep declaring it.

if it was off the road before sorn came in then it wont have to be sorn, i wrote into the dvla and tried to sorn a couple of minis when sorn came out, and got a reply stating as they were off the road before sorn came out, they were exempt from sorn until the time they were put back on the road and the tax had ran out

They may ask to come out and inspect the vehicle when you try and register it in your name .

As Bungle Says....

Once you change the registered owner then it will need to be sorn'ed, every year

A few months back I had an old mini on the blue type log book which I signed over to my son, the new type V5 came but no mention of having it sorn, I would go with ANON on this one, the mini in question was a 77 req last taxed and on the road in 98. I did try to sorn it by going to the DVLA sorn page but its not even in the system. You could try putting the reg in the DVLA page below and see if its in the system.

SORN isn’t needed if your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998
If your vehicle's road tax ran out before SORN was introduced, you do not need to declare SORN or declare in any other way that it is off the road. Neither will you receive any tax reminders. It will only come under the SORN system after it is re-taxed and put back on the road for the first time by you.

I have a 1972 Mini with a new style V5. Was last on the road in 1996 and doesn't have to be SORNed each year.

It doesn't matter how many times the keeper changes the sorn does not come into force in this case, untill the car has been taxed and it comes to the end of the tax period, then tax or sorn, i have a 1961 buick which hs een off the road untaxed for 20+ years ith several owner changes and i can't sorn it due to it being off the road since before the sorn law was introduced.
