Mpi: Standard Airbox Mod

I would like to modify the standard airfilterbox for my MPI. When I bought my Mini it had already a K&N airfilter in it. The problem I have with the supplied K&N filter is that it doesn't run not that smooth, so I got a second hand original MPI airbox and replaced the K&N. Now with the standard airbox it runs a little bit better, but (I think) due to the standard air-intake tube, it takes up a lot of hot air from the engine unit, the performance in the top end revs is not that satisfying. So I come up with the following options to get more "cold air" into the airbox.
The first option I have is to extend the standard air-intake with a flexible aluminium hose (ie. diameter 76mm) to the grill.
The second option is to replace the standard air-intake tube for a flexible aluminium hose, with a bigger diameter ie. 90mm, from the grill up to the standard airbox.
Anyone already tried this?

IMO the best filter arrangement for the MPi is the standard box with the correct K&N insert fitted.

People have tried that but its not as effective as one of these - K&N Replacement element filter with 6 holes in the front of the standard airbox

Would anyone be able to clarify if drilling holes in the MPI air box makes any difference to performence...
...If anybody has actually tried this would they please be able to post some pictures of where they drilled the holes???
And if anybody has acctually attempted this successfully would they be able to clarify if this improves the sound ie. makes is any louder???
Im young, its my weekend car...i like loud noises from my cars
thanks

To save the air box and sell to someone else if you're so inclined, why not get the K+N cone filter instead if noise is what you're after?

The simple answer to that is my budget, i generally try to avoid costly adjustments at the moment and therefore look for free modifications i can make.
I have fitted K+N filters to plenty of mates cars so am well aware of the sound difference but just cant seem to afford one myself at the moment.
however i wouldnt make a modification (even a free one) without a little research from those with a little more knowledge...thanks for the advice though

Thanks Zony i have already checked out this post and all credit to the modification its very tidy
i posted a reply a couple of days ago so hopefully i will get an answer from somebody who has attempted this
thanks for advising me though because this is the exact thing i am looking to do just want to make sure its not going to be a wste of time and a waste of a perfectly good standard part

Cheers folks.
Umm I have a K&N airfilter in there, and minime seems to have more grunt and seems to pick up a bit quicker...now I dunno if its just my driving has changed since doing it, as its got a nice deep intake noise (not real loud like an K&N induction kit) but nice
I also trimmed back the throttle stop to.
If you have time and a couple of quid then go for it, i wernt dissapointed and my GF loves it when i plant my foot on the motorways...waaaarp
