Is the starter turning over? What is and isn't happening?Been on holiday for a week come home and mini started first time went out later on to go out and the car won't fire up
How do you know the battery is fine? Same questions as above.the battery fine and working .
Depending on the distance you have traveled, this may be a tune-up issue or not. How was the car running before your trip? The car has not been serviced in a year since i bought it and
Yes. The ignition has to be on for a short while for the fuel gauge to properly indicate the fuel level.does the fuel level show just with igition on ?
Also, please provide more info on the year and type of your Mini.

did you use the choke the second time and did it smell badly after petrol?
If so, you probably 'drowned' it: try starting without choke and the throttle full opened.
Once it starts, let go off the accellerator.

Take a read through this thread:

You may find some helpful pointers there.
In the thread above, the problem was eventually addressed by replacing the points and condenser. If your Mini has points (as opposed to electronic ignition) then this may be the issue with your car as well.

The car ---- starts and nearly turns over and the car has not been running to bad before i went on hoilday
Would a bump start provide any help,
put some more petrol in the car just in case and still just making the starting noise
but get a few kicks where is sounds like it is going to fire up .
"Nearly turns over" and "Starting noise". Please clarify those. Is the engine turning over on the starter motor or not? Describe the sound it is making.

Tryed with choke out and choke in and with full throttle on both ways .
Mini will start best with choke and no throttle.
As said it sounds like a sparks problem (points condenser if it has them)

Might be worth a quick rub with glasspaper to get that connection.
Have you checked that the leads are all connected to the coil?
Lastly, you may think stupid, but I know of a girl who spent 3 jours trying to get her mini started. It was turning over but not sparking, eventually she remembered that she had a home made immobiliser fitted to the coil circuit!!!!!! Flicked the switch & VRRROOOOOOMMMMM
