As title says I'm off to get new engine tomorrow just wondering how to tell if it is 1275?
What would engine number be and any other tell tale signs

All 1275's engine numbers start with 12A or 12H (eg 12HE##) Try this website for more info on the numbers http://www.calverst....cation_data.htm

A quick and easy way to tell is that there will be two core plugs on the engine block above the clutch in stead of one like 998s & 1098s.

Not at all. The best 1275s are numbered in the 9F range, and that's just those originally from Minis. Lots of factory replacements have very funny numbers not related to any series at all, although 8G is a common Gold / Silver seal 1275 number. Or 38, or RKM, or GSE etc, etc....

A large bore A-Series will not have removeable covers on the rear of the block (apart from the ultra-rare early Cooper lumps). As mentioned they have two core plugs on the clutch end rather than one.

A large bore cylider head will have the thermostat hose pointing straight forwards. If the thermostat housing isn't in place you will see that it's front two bolts form a straight line with the front row of head bolts whereas on a small-bore engine's head the front thermostat bolts are off at an angle.

You could always use the GuessWorks engine number decoder to tell you what you need to know.
