Advance pipe is essential for sharp response and good economy - I think you have just found all the reasons that made this dizzy available secondhand..... Put it on ebay.......

Good dizzy for 1275 is an MG Metro one
The advance comes in pretty quick and static can be as much as 13 degrees if you need it (lumpy cam)

Aldon are over rated in my opinion unless specificity profiled for your engine. :)

On the Cooper 'S' a vac advance was never fitted.
Aldon did a custom dizzy for my rally 'S' and it has proved fantastic. I just gave them the full spec and they curved one with no vac adv to suit my spec. Price was reasonable and it's been ultra-reliable, despite running with points ignition (as required for Historic rallying).

I used to run the Aldon Yellow worked fine even with the kent 530 cam (649).

But I've seen the light/future and am now Megajolt'd, which is by far the BEST option. If your not restricted by class regulations.

Yes, Megajolt is the way to go, but I'm not allowed that for Historics.
I had a 286 at 11.2:1 CR, etc, and with an Aldon 'Red' with no vac adv when optimised for top end power on the RR it just would not turn over when hot as the static adv was too high.
Aldon re-curved it and gave me an additional 4.5 degs mech adv and it has proved fantastic over many years of hard use. I change the points regularly, but other than that I've not really touched it. Static advance is 5.5 degrees so it always turns over even when hot with my 530 CCA battery.

Sorry to bring up an old post but how can you tell what aldon dizzy you have? i have one but i can't see any id numbers on it etc.

Will it be better than a electric metro dizzy? as i have one spare?

Thanks

josh

Have just purchased an Aldon put together by them to match my engine spec (A+ Series - Yellow 100AYP) it has no vac advance though I did ask the question
about adding it later if I was not happy with it, good news is it can be easily be added though it requires the baseplate changing as well. Aldon are just 10 minutes from me so Had a pretty in depth chat with the bloke who puts them together, he was extremely helpful.

There should be scribed on the body a number and letters AY is Aldon Yellow and AR is Red - there can be a third letter this identifies the lead output (side/top) and if its a igniter distributor, A+ blocks and drive dogs

And in regard to your second question, depends what the engine spec is, In a standard metro engine the curve will suit that engine, the Aldon wont have the right curve, for a tuned engine the Aldon yellow will be better than the standard.

Thanks guys.

I'll have a look tomorrow, It's a 1380 with high compression, big valves and sw10 cam so not standard

Thanks,

Josh
