Does the original Mk1 black gear knob just screw on? Would it fit a later remote change gear stick?

It depends on which one, I seem to remember one type has a 'hard' cut thread directly in the body, the other has a softer rubber insert, I'd try to find one of the rubber insert ones off a MK3 with a rod change box, that should fit and give you the Look you are after

Basically I want to put a little knob on a big rod.

The one in the link looks like the right one, I had one on the rod change in my MK3' might be a idea to do a quick swap with another one just to double check before you buy

I'm not sure whether or not an original mk 1 gearknob will fit a later model, but I can confirm that you can buy a very similar looking mk1 replica gearknob that does, as I have one fitted to my 1993 model.

Where can I buy it from?

I got mine from one of the bigger trade stands at Mitp. I'm not sure which one, although I've seen the same traders stand before at a lot of the other big shows too like L2B etc. Sorry I can't be more specific.
