Kent 276
stage 3ish head
1.5.1 rockers
electronic dizzy
Got the engine running and i know it needs a r/road session but no time at the moment and have set the advance to 16 btdc @ 1500 rmp vacuum pipe disconnected. The engine pulls ok after about 4000rpm but before then it's slugish so just wondering what others have there advanced set to ??.
Cheers

What carburation do you have? It could be running a bit lean below 4k revs.
Check the mixture first, then fiddle with the timing by advancing it a bit to see if that improves it without causing any 'pinking'.
The 276 should start to pull strongly from about 3500 rpm.

How much mechanical advance is in the dizzy? My view - these rockers are a mistake - that's partly why the power is so high up. As above really - advance the timing until it's 'not quite' pinking - and then do a plug colour check after a good hard run.

Whoops sorry hif44 carb, bap needle, lcb and maniflow twin box exhaust.
How much mechanical advance is in the dizzy?, have not a clue!!, Is there anyway of finding out??
The reson for the rockers was they where there and so got fitted, then i read after fitting in vizards book that the 276 was to be used with said rockers. but it is only a weekend car so i can live with a lot more:).
Hope to get some time of work soon to get it setup.

The mech advance should be stamped on the nose of the swinging weight inside the dizzy. But I believe if you can get the type number off the dizzy - you can look up it's spec on the 'net.

Advance is stamped on base plate as bmecosse says, times this by two as cam speed is half crank speed.
If the No on the plate is ten then you have 20 degees of mech advance + the 16 static give 36 at say 3500/4000(total advance) which may be a little too much depending...not far off though if it dont pink then its ok.
Try retarding 5 degrees and see if it pulls better at high revs, you can advance a bit at a time from there till the power drops off again
If your dizzy isn't a 10 deg (e.g. MG Metro) then it will be more (unless you are lucky enough to find an 8 ) and you timing will be way to advanced if you use 16 at 1500.
Could be an 11 (22 deg adv) or even 15 (30 deg adv) depending on where it came from.
