998 cc manual mayfair 1989

Had a stiff gearstick (ohh eer misses) - was stiff when selecting 1st / 2nd (left of the vehicle not forward backward)

stripped remote gear selector box - all fine

I have now got gearbox out & the selector shaft is easy to push in/out , but hard to turn to the 1st / 2nd position

I'm thinking bent / clashing selector fork

3rd & 4th are fine as is reverse - it's just stiff to push the stick over to the 1st / 2nd gate

when there it's fine for selecting 1st & 2nd

Any Ideas ??? - no Viagra or Bromide Jokes ;0)

Thanks

Reverse is easy
it's hard to move the stick from the center to the left hand side , when there it wants to stay
but when there selecting 1st & 2nd is easy
It is then hard to move back to center position , but when in center it loosens up
I think I will have to rip out the main shaft to see the problem :(

Reverse idler bush is your problem, it's worked it's way out of the gear and is causing a misalignment of the select pivots which causes a stiffness when moving the gearstick across the gate.

Is there any possible 'cure' without stripping the box??

I think you can get the reverse gear out without a complete strip down...Just wheek the Laygear out and then there might be enough room to get the reverse gear out...But while you have the box apart you might as well plonk in some new Baulk rings....Whats the mileage on the box?

I was meaning - any way without taking the unit out of the car - any access if the nose section with the speedo drive etc is removed -gearbox still in the car?

I dont think so as the reverse gear is behind the speedo drive section of the box.So although you can get the retaining plate for the reverse gear shaft off with the speedo housing renoved, And possibly even be able to pull the shaft out. there is no way of removing the actual gear with out splitting the engine from the box and removing the laygear.. Which for me would mean an engine out job.

Simple answer is, engine out, gearbox off...

If you want to be a bit of a bodger about it, I suppose there is a faint possibility that you could remove the reverse shaft and then with a punch try and hit the bush back in, but you're really going to mess it up and probably will not get the shaft back in...

Spot on
That was the problem - thanks
anyway of stopping it happening again ??? - I guess gentle reversing
I see there has been some locktite - or similar on the gear bearing
also noticed the first motion spigot bearing had 2 rollers missing - but no damage - so must have been like that from new
will now need new bearing
thanks everyone for your help
