So i made the mistake of leaving a light on in the car and the battery was dead, had to jump start it about 4 times yesterday, finally a mate of mine lent me a Halfords car battery charger for cars up to 1200cc, mines the 1275cc mayfair, all i want to know is, how long should it take to charge close to full, it had enough power for the lights to work but not to start the car.
Cheers

Isn't there some metre on the battery charger, saying how many amps it's still pulling to charge?
Depends on the condition of the battery, I'd leave it as long as you can, I usually charge the little standard mini ones up over one whole day and night if it's completely flat, but then our bespoke battery charge is intelligent and automatically switches to float charge... (even tells you how long is left until charge or full charge on the digital display)

This charger is pretty basic, says that it's charging and then another light to show when it's fully charged, my old man suggested that it should be on all night, i'm just a bit anxious about anything negative happening over night, pardon the pun, but yeah, i'm guessing it should be fine over the next 18 hours or so.

Should be fine, make sure it's away from anything that can cause a spark or flame, and preferably in a ventilated area, then it will be OK to leave overnight.

If it did not re-charge after a jump start its possible you have killed the battery, sometimes if they are drained completely they will not take a proper charge again.

it could be that one of the cell's has gone - i took mine to halfords and they tested it form me, advised that the cell had gone and suggested a replacement battery - how long have you had your current one?

Not sure how long this one has been in the car, i've only had the car since late May, but it's not an original battery, i've charged it fully as of this morning and i'm preparing to put it in the car and see how it goes, i'll keep you guys posted. Hopefully it's not gonna mean i need a new battery

Surely once it's got enough juice to start, you can just leave it running and let the alternator charge the battery?

Locked and loaded, it seems to be fine, i guess it just needed a good charging, i've been on a few short journeys today, and it was a success as the car didn't refuse to start, shouldn't leave the cabin light on again
