Firstly, how do you know that the type of tattoo that looks good in a picture, or on someone else, will actually look any good on you until you actually have it done?
Secondly, tattoo styles often seem to change over the years, so what do you do if your particular tattoo goes out of fashion? ( I mean it's not like you can change it in line with trends, like you can with your clothes or your hair cut.)
Thirdly, I often now look back at pictures of my hair and clothes from years gone by and cringe at what I looked like back then, even though I thought I looked great at the time. So even if I have a tattoo that I love now, what's to say that I wont hate it in a few years time?
Or is it just a case of "live for now" and if you are the type of person who is likely to dwell on the consequences, then you probably aren't the type of person who should be considering having a tattoo in the first place?

Sorry to hijack, it's just that I've always wanted to have a tattoo myself but a few things keep putting me off:

It doesn't really matter if it's on your bum

Firstly I wouldn't be getting a tattoo for "current trends".
A decent tattoo artist can make things look great, always (like anything) do some research on the artist, their work etc etc.
I have one I got when I was 18, not the greatest but it will soon become part of a bigger picture.
Who knows if you'll like one later on, as above mine I had when I was 18 will be adapted to suit.
