I'm interested in upgrading from the standard speakers in the parcel shelf of my 1996 SPI Cooper, anybody know what size they are? The car is having welding done at the moment so I can't go and check! Also, what speakers would you recommend for the parcel shelf? I don't want to spend too much and I don't really want to amp anything but I do want to be able to crank up my tunes without wincing for all the crackling I can hear! Would prefer speakers that will go in the holes already there but will make the holes bigger if it makes sense too. Not a fan of 6x9s though, would like them to blend in. Thanks!

Standard fit speakers were 5.25" but cutting out a little metal or putting in a spacer you can easily fit 6.5" speakers. Are they going to be run straight from a factory radio or do you have an after market head unit?

Replacing them with a pair of decent name co axials, and buying an aftermarket head unit will supply you with a good upgrade in sound, without using amps or changing the positioning.

If your budget Is restricted - then check TalkAudio's sales section for some 2nd hand bargains. My Head Unit was a mid range alpine unit from 4/5 years ago - I got it for £30.

the holes in the parcel shelf changed size through to years/models. some are 5.25 and others are 6.5.

but as said above a 6.5 will fit into a 5.25 hole with a spacer

Thanks for the replies so far. My budget on speakers would be around £50 I imagine. I already have this aftermarket stereo. Any advice on specific speakers? 1st or 2nd hand, I'm not bothered. And my budget is stretchy, when it comes to my mini and audio it always is.

Anything on that page, remember you get what you pay for...
The GZ stuff is well built for lower priced kit. But your ears have to make your mind up.

My PERSONAL opinion is not that high of anything from FLI, it is the low end of the budget brands and the build quality shows that.

With many things which includes car audio I feel it's better to buy from a brand that makes kit right across the spectrum of cost, from low to high.
I take the same approach with MTB etc. Because of two reasons.
1: A company that make high end kit will not forget the stuff they know when they make their budget ranges.
2: If they make a duff product, they have a LOT more to lose in damage to their brands perception and market postion. Therefore they tend not to but anything out sub standard or cut corners, even on the budget ranges.

Maybe look at Helix, Infinity, Alpine...

Perhaps this Alpine set or this Helix then?

They both look good.

I'm not (and no one else should either) going to tell you what to buy though. It's your money and your ears.
I will give you facts based on experience and known brand history. But I will never say to anyone you have to buy this or that model etc.

Ruckus, I am in a similar situation to Dave, so hopefully he won't mind me posting this question here. I have already changed from the Rover tape player to a basic Sony CD headunit, and I'm thinking about changing the parcel shelf speakers too. I have read your posts regarding front speakers but I would like to keep the car looking standard and being an MPi front speaker pods are not really possible. For changing the rear speakers is it just a case of connecting them up to the existing Rover radio loom, or should new, better cables be run from the head unit to the speakers when performing the upgrade?

Thanks,
James

I've changed standard speakers before on the standard wiring, can't see a reason to upgrade the wires, unless you are spending more on the speakers perhaps?

I wish I could hear them, £50 is a lot to fork out on an internet description. What do you have in your parcel shelf Ruckus?
