I have found an Advisory along with my current MOT on my 07 Passat that mentions the engine cover which is bizarre but nothing about the under tray. So go figure!!

fair enough (again apologies for the daft question first time round).no, i'm not running oil coolers on either. i've not had any problems on either. also one of the minis with the sump guard came from japan with the sump gaurd already fitted and its a lot hotter over there than it is here. i'm not saying that you don't need an oil cooler though just that i'm not using one.
i was always told an oil cooler is necessary when running a sump guard. but hey hoe, if it works, it works.

On a low-revving engine at higher road speeds (in relative terms) a sump guard may not mean an oil cooler is needed, although it can never be a bad thing so long as the oil doesn't then run too cold in Winter weather (= fit an oil thermostat).
I hope this explains it well enough.

thats perfect cooperman, clears everything up perfectly. The issue of an oil cooler on a Mini with a sump guard came about because a sump guard is normally fitted to rally cars. A rally car has very low gearing to maximise acceleration at the expense of top speed and this is combined with a lot of time spent at high revs in the lower gears and relatively low forward speed which thus minimises air flow across the sump fins. Also, a rally car usually has some sort of material between guard and sump which prevents any air flowing under the sump. All this equals high oil temperatures.
