1960 Morris mini with Austin America 1275 (remote gear change)

I am in the process of rebuilding my mini and re-assembling. I have my remote gearchange and I have no idea how to get the gear selector to grab that small ball on the gearbox. I may not be explaining this very well but the long shaft with the actual shift lever attached to it will not couple with the gearbox. Is there some sort of special trick to this? Does it. Wed to be in a specific gear? Any help would be really appreciated.

Your post is a bit unclear so I'll try to answer as best I can.

If you are talking about the shift housing to the gearbox proper, you need a sandwich plate to hold the castings together. There should be a fork on the end of the shift housing that goes around the ball coming down from the differential housing. In neutral you should be able to align that fork with the ball and then secure the bolts to the sandwich plate.

If you are talking about the shift lever itself going into the end of the remote housing that is clearly different. There should be a socket in the end of the shift housing... possibly with a nylon cup in it. The gearshift lever should have a metal cup around its shaft and above the large pivot ball. A spring goes under this cup. With the gearbox in neutral you should be able to position the smaller shift lever ball over the nylon cup and then push the lever down into the housing. While holding the metal cup down to compress the spring you should install two small bolts to hold the lever in place.
