I have never had good results using a compression tester.  The testing results have always been erratic.  The various forums I have participated in recommended using a leakdown tester instead.  I purchased a kit for $21 and have had very good results.  I don't know if you can obtain this one in the UK, but this link will show the kit contents.  Look up "cylinder leakdown test" on google for guidance on how to do a leakdown test.
