At what point do people recommend I paint my engine block during the rebuild process? I've got it back from the machine shop and cleaned it all out. Should I do it now before I put the pistons / crank etc back in or when it's all built up?

Personally I would mask up all of the machined faces and open holes and paint it now rather than when it's all assembled. The finish you get should be about the same as doing a whole engine but it'll be much easier to do and you wont have to worry about getting paint on bolts heads and stuff like that.
