hello. i think i no the answer to my own question but any help would be appreciated.
my mums mini is a 96 mini cooper it had an engine rebuild 500 miles ago. its been fine but recently the gearbox has been making a knocking sound.
when the car is at idle in neutral it makes the noise when the clutch is in the noise goes. when driving the car still makes the noise but is worse when you lift off the power but again when clutch is in the noise goes.
if your driving at say 30mph in gear and press the clutch in the noise goes, but if it was the gearbox would it still make the noise as the road wheels would still be turning the gearbox internals.
and it grates when reverse is selected.
now i think its the layshaft but i hope its the thrust bearing, ider gears/ bearings or a clutch problem.

it did have quick shift on it but ive taken it off.

is the problem the box as i think

There's two problems...

Easy one to start with... Crunch into reverse means your clutch is dragging, bleed the clutch hydraulics and try again... will probably go away.

Second problem... as you rightly surmise, if your coasting, and you press the clutch and the noise goes away then it's not the transmission ( or very unlikely ).... which suggest either a rattly clutch release bearing or the idler gear is wobbling.
