I've searched and searched all over this engine, i see nothing that looks like the format everyone is saying the engine code comes in. This is a 64 MK1. Ive looked above where the alternator is, but the numbers weren't the same format as the engine numbers it was 12a2324.
Could any one point out where these numbers are located?

12A2324 sounds more like a part number, which generally means its a factory recon unit..
The 12A prefix on the A series engine number did not come into use until the RSP and Mainstream coopers in the 90's and would have been followed by a letter not a number.

I've got an old parts catalogue and there's nothing close to that number in there. How is it marked, engine numbers are stamped into a little alloy plate that's "riveted on"

Sorry this has taken me so long! Unfortunately there are no tags or anything rivited on the car at all, it was turned into a rally car about 20 years ago or so. The only tags that are left are the Austin badge on the engine and those patent numbers, assuming those are original
I'll attach a pic this is right by the water pump basically if you where looking right past the radiator (which is removed)
