Hi all,

I have a 1997 1275CC Rover Mini.

I was just leafing through the owner's handbook, and found that the MPG whilst driving in an urban environment was listed as 33.4 MPG.

The last owner of the car told me when I bought that car that he could do around 140 miles on a full tank. That works out to be around 19MPG.

I'm in the process of fixing the fuel level gauge, and the guy who owned it before didn't use it.

Should the MPG be as low as 19 on a 1997 Mini?

Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks,

Simon.

P.S. If you need any more info about the car, feel free to ask.

No. Round town mine is approx 30, then on a steady run I can get 45-50mpg. I suggest you fill her up and note the mileage, then fill her up in a week say and get the calculator out. The fuel gauge is just that - a gauge... they're well known for being very innaccurate. Get to know yours to avoid embarrasment!

Yeah, that's what I expected it to be.

Thanks for the info. I'll be getting the calculator out, of course;

1. I'll fill her up full, and note the mileage.
2. After a week, I'll fill her up again, and note the cost of the refill and the mileage.
3. The cost of the refill will tell me how much it cost me to go the number of miles that I noted.
4. Using the price of petrol, I can work out from the cost how many litres I put into the tank.
5. Using the number of litres that I put into the tank, and the number of miles that I noted, I can work out how many litres I used for that number of miles.
6. Using this figure, I can then work out how many miles per gallon I did.

That the correct method? I keep confusing myself, so just want to check :)

Simon.

Note down the amount you add, saves working it out from price and cost.

Otherwise, you're on the right track.

Of course. I just wanted to check that, even if I drove slowly, whether my MPG would still be apalling. Thanks anyway :)

For those who are interested - I've just done a check, and it turns out I can get up to 35MPG in my mini. Result!

Thanks for the help.

Yeah - I think I've found the solution, but I haven't been able to test it yet.

There's a difference between the Injection mini fuel sender unit, and the non injection mini fuel sender unit.

The injection fuel sender unit has a bend in the arm, so that it can fit round the fuel pump. May be your problem if you've got the non injection fuel sender unit in your tank. All you need to do is bend it like so:

I got told that on this forum, so hopefully it'll work. :)
