Hi
Does anybody know where I could get a carb for my 998cc Mini Thirty. According to the garage that has MOT'd the car, the carb that is currently on it is for a 1800-2000cc.
I've had a look on Minispares but as i'm not exactly a mechanic, they kind of all look the same to me!
Thanks!

This is the type of carb a Mini 30 would have as standard:

But you can probably find a second hand one much cheaper.
What carb do you currently have fitted though? Not sure if the garage knows what they are talking about if they think it's from a 2000cc car.
At the end of the day, if your car is running ok then why bother changing it?

hs4 is the standard carb for 998 but you can put a hif38 for better performance

Has it failed MOT on emissions ? HIF 38 will be the carb to use on a standard 998.

I dont know how they know your carb is for a 1800-2000cc engine as that would have to be at least an HS8 which is far too big for a 998 & it would run like 5H1T. Can you give us the number on the little alloy tag on the carb (if it has one)? If not then you'll need to measure the air inlet size:
HS2 = 1.25"(32mm),
HS4(or HIF38) = 1.5" (38mm)
HS6(or HIF44) = 1.75" (44mm),
HS8 = 2" (50.8mm)
You'll need to remove the air filter, if its a standard filter box undo the two top wing nuts & lift off the box then you can undo the two screws holding the elbow on & measure the face of that. If it's a Kn'N type remove it and try to measure the face of the carb.
Here's a couple of sites with some Carb info which makes interesting reading:

If you do have the wrong carb I have a spare HS4 carb I could sell you, PM me to let me know if you need it.

Thanks everyone for replying. It did fail it's MOT on emissions but also needed some welding doing. We tried getting it running before the MOT and it was running really badly, was fine on the straight and flat but as soon as it hit any incline the engine would cut out regardless of how much rev you gave it.
I'll find out from the garage what carb is currently on it as it's still with them.
Thanks Brams96, i may well be in touch!
