ive done it before but its a real pita, its almost as easy to pull the motor out.

hmm thinking about it you should be able to do it with the engine in as youve got a flip front that should help quite abit

HI
It is possible to fit oil pump with engine in car but i would remove the engine as it would be much easier and cleaner and you would have to remove one of the engine mounts and support the engine while you worked on it
.Bear also in mind that when stripping engine down to this stage (gears and bearings exposed ) you need to be very scrupulously clean when reassembling and having the engine still mounted its easy to contaminate the area .
So ............... Take the engine out !

I have fitted the main clutch oil seal when reassembling and in situ ,the seal is easier to fit to the cover first then refit cover BUT you must be very very careful not to damage the oil seal lips or dislodge the tensioner spring as you slide it over the splines . i use insulation tape and a smear of grease to help , dont forget the plastic oil seal cover /oil flinger afer you fit the oil seal .

Buy a good quality oil seal ,if it starts leaking its a big job to change it for the sake of a few quid .

If yo uare fitting a replacement pump, then I will assume that it is because you have no oil pressure..... in which case the chances are that you will NOT fix the issue just mask it for a short period :(

I've got no oil pressure, what could be the cause of this? ie what would it temporarily mask?

If you have no oil pressure at all I'd first check the bypass valve, to check it's not stuck open. If not that then it may be the main and / or big end bearings.

i've had a look at the overpressure spring - is this what you mean? the spring length was correct and it didn't seem seized, how does it normally work? Would the normal pressure move it and it opens completely at over the max rated pressure or does it never move until over pressure?

Are you trying to get oil pressure after rebuilding the engine? I see from your signature that the car has been off the road.

No, the engine has just not ran for a long time! I managed to get oil pressure this morning by priming the pump and now it's all ok! Cheers!

Turn it backwards, 'n fill it through the transfer pipe connection. I'd fit the seal after the transfer case is fitted if you haven't got the proper tool.
