I'll try to be as specific as possible.

I am finding that when the engine is warm (i.e. when no choke is needed usually) the engine idles really chuggy, though sometimes it will be fine. It's a real pain when coming up to junctions and roundabouts as the engine just dies when I put the clutch down. If I leave it for a bit standing still, or turn it off and turn on again it goes fine. It's also MUCH more likely to cut out when cornering. It never does it when in gear.

I have done a full service, oil change, filter, dizzy cap, spark plugs, rotor arm and points but this had made no difference to the problem at all. It also seems to happen more when I rev the engine a little then take my foot away quickly (when the clutch is depressed/disengaged). Sometimes I can pull onto the drive, put the clutch down and guarantee that by applying some gas then taking my foot off immediately the engine will stall.

Now, I have found that when it does go chuggy I can keep the engine alive by giving it some revs, either by pulling the choke out or using one foot to operate the accelerator and brake at the same time thereby keeping the revs up (awkward). I don't have a tachometer.

I had this problem when I first got the car about a year ago then it seemed to clear up but has come back again recently. I wondered whether it might be due to a badly set up carb/blockage or I read somewhere about thrust bearings going.

If any of you has some thoughts they'd be much appreciated. :)

Thrust bearings was my first thought when I read the title.

Have you checked your dashpot oil. Also simple things like making sure dizzy cap is clean and dry, HT leads same.
What is your tickover set at ??

Thanks for the input guys. I obviously haven't owned a mini for long enough yet as, lrostoke, you were correct- I put some oil in the dashpot and the problem went away. I'm not sure where the oil was meant to go up to though, I just unscrewed the top and filled it until just before the top. I might have done it wrong but it solved the problem!

I'm glad it wasn't the thrust bearings (yet!) as I couldn't have afforded the fix! Barbiematters, hope you get your problem sorted- just make sure to top up the dash oil and see if that helps!

Thanks again guys :)
