Interesting 'Bangernomics' report on AustinRover Online:
VW Golf Mk4 high mileage 2000(V) Volkswagen Golf TDI SE was £500 to buy - and aside from consumables, it's cost zero to run during the past year:

What is Bangernomics?
Put simply, it is the science of running a car for next to nothing:

Anyone on TMF with similar stories or recommendations for good Bangernomic daily drivers?

Rover 400 or pug 306(non hdi) would be my choice for sure.

I've had loads of them and they've all been good cars.

I tend to set a £2.5k(used to be £2k) limit for my cars, bought a mk4 52 plate golf 130bhp tdi se estate 6speed 2 years ago for £2.5k, spent nothing apart from servicing and tyres.

My dad years ago use to do this, without the term Bangernomics being known of. He always had a nice car usually a Jag and then his favourite other was a Reliant Scimiter which he'd use for a year or 2 then sell on for at least the same but usually more than he paid for it. The fibre glass shell was a big part of it, but to be fair on him (this is 30+ years ago) he knew the cars well and would wait for a new bargain one before selling the one he already had

Cheap way of running a second car and clever. Like Shifty said Golfs must be a good one today
