Start with the ignition, it never hurts to clean & set the plug and points gaps. It will also take seconds to check for air leaks from split or loose hoses. How's the air filter too?

Vacuum advance unit working ok? We really need you to check/reset the valve gaps then get a compression test to see the general condition of the engine . Obviously the ignition system needs to be tip top......

youve not said what carb you have fitted. If its a normal HS carb undo the three screws on top of the float chamber and take the lid off carefully. Get an old rag and soak the petrol out from the pot and give it a wipe inside with some clean rag. Refit the lid and start up the car. It may just be crud in the carb and doing this normally clears out the debris as it forces fuel back into the chamber to fill it up. (engine will turn four of five times before it fires up again whilst the fuel finds its way back through).

If nothing else it will eliminate that as an issue. I used to get the problem with my first mini when i was a student and kept running the fuel tank low (sucks all the dregs through.......)

Good luck friend..
