As above but I've got 1.5 roller tip rockers on and at the moment a metro turbo box that might be getting fixed by guessworks or swapped to a standard 1275 box.

MG Metro or Kent 266 are both superb cams, but to get the best from either you do need a gas-flowed head and better exhaust system.

Sounds a fair price. Don't forget the new cam followers when you install it. The carb will need some tuning and most likely a new needle.

Engine out job to fit it of course - so may as well plan for a general overhaul..... I would get rid of the high ratio rockers......

Yes, so would I.
Fit new oil pump, mains, big ends, thrusts, piston rings, hone the bores and check everything else like clutch plate, water pump, etc.

It's getting a gearbox recon, that's the reason why I decided to go for it, yeah I've got 1.5 roller tip rockers on there too. Been thinking of it since I put them on and since the engine has to come out for the bo, I'll have that on there too

Regarding the carb needle, is it an easy job to change it in a hiff44?

Needles are easy to change.
Just a thought the OP hasnt said anything about the Cylinder head. Your cam upgrade will be largely lost until the head has been upgraded to be honest.
Get rid of the high ratio rockers.

Do what cooperman said about recon bits.

ive been looking into the same upgrades and it would appear im in the same boat (money wise).

basically a cam change will have an effect but not fully until the head is worked on too.

i was told get the cam done first that way the engine can come out and then be put back in. the head can be done later with the engine in situe.

the head work is also more expensive than a cam change (from the prices ive been quoted).

Head work is much more expensive than the cam change.
But necessary to see the difference.

Exactly - this is the chance to get the cam changed. Flog the high ratio rockers to raise some cash.... The MG Metro ran better with its uprated cam, so all is not lost. Look for a 'big valve ' version of the 940 head - with some DIY work down the exhaust throats - it's a worthwhile upgrade for your engine.
