I've come to point of stripping and painting my engine. Where the back of the engine has been covered with oil and grease it looks a khaki/gold colour not a yellow as i thought was the original colour. Does anybody know what the original colour of the 998 engine was? No point in taking a photo as it looks yellow in the picture, the camera lies!

What year are we talking?
A+ (1983ish onwards) 998cc were originally yellow, 1275cc were red.

Gold 'may' signify a goldseal reconditioned engine, but I think that would only have applied to earlier (pre A+) engines.

Pre A+ were BMC Green until 1972ish, then black until the A+ appeared in '82/'83.

Mines an A+ 1991 car and it isn't a goldseal engine as far as i can tell. Has been with the car throughout it's 20 year life.

Im confused then, my block even behind the push rods dosent look yellow it looks more like BLVC15 (Bronze yellow) http://www.mini-colo...olour.php?c=93. Why does my block seem to be a strange colour? And when we say 'yellow' are we talking a bright yellow like daytona yellow or differant?

Standard A+ yellow is/ was bright... more like the colour of the smilies! Either yours has been painted or has changed colour over the years. It's not unusual for an engine that has cooked itself (head gasket failure for example) to turn its paint black in places.

I'm starting to think that my engine is just a case of Rover laziness. 'We havent got any more yellow paint, so this will do'

Yes! My block does look that colour, why would there be such a big differance between them in terms of yellow?

I think it's just age and staining, with dirt and oil etc.
