Hello All

Can anyone please tell me the approximate weight of an 850 engine block, complete with pistons, crank, camshaft and all the other stuff inside?

I am not worried about the weight of the gearbox or cylinder head,

I will be taking the engine block assembly it to a mini engine rebuilder and need to get this into my car, and wonder if it can be lifted single handedly into the boot of my Focus without having to use my engine hoist.

Cheers
John

I believe a 1275 with head/gearbox etc was 150kgs?

Not sure if that helps, but I'm sure you could lift it on your own if you're a big fella, can't you get a hand to lift it?

i pulled a full 850 lump out of my buddies mini a couple years back. One person can pick it up, but i would suggest at least two people if you want to save the paintwork on your Focus.

Are we talking a built short block, if so, make sure you've had your weetabix and pick it up...

I'm lumping short blocks about all the time...

yes, just the built up block (no cylinder head, gearbox, flywheel, transfer case, as these are all removed)

Block with all internals and no transmission on it would weigh about 275lb / 125kg

Even I can lift the block assembly out of my Mini.....leaving the gearbox behind of course. If worried - place a wide plank/sheet of ply running into the boot - put the engine on the plank, then jack up the free end with trolley jack - then slide the engine along the now horizontal plank. Works even better if the car can be parked on a slope!

Thanks guys, I decided to use my engine hoist after all, besides thats what its for. I put a thick sheet of MDF on the boot floor, and my car has tie down loops welded on the floor. I used a ratchet strap and the engine is securely held down to large blocks of wood, giving space underneath for the crank.

Off to the rebuilder tomorrow.

Cheers
John
