Has anyone else seen this?

http://www.shockingt...illing-himself/

Its sad really. I can understand why the animals had to be killed, but surely it would have been better to use a tranquillizer round and knock them out, then capture them all? They could then maybe have been released back into their natural environment, or a zoo that could look after them properly.

I love going to zoos and seeing the animals, although sometimes I wish they were just left in their natural habitat. I know that the majority of zoos do a great job recreating the environment that the animals live in and look after them well though.

this was the day before yesterday.

the chap who released them then shot himself.

they couldnt tranquilize them as he let them out in the evening, by the time the people with the right guns got there it wouldve been dark and too difficult to find the animals.

they had to kill them to save the public.

he released lions and all sorts.

What annoys me about this story is how a man with a history of animal cruelty was able to keep 18 bengal tigers and 17 lions amongst others. It's not like you can smuggle them in under your jacket is it? Surely there must be some kind of process to go through if you want to keep lions and tigers, why at some point in this process didn't someone tell him he can't have them cause he's not a particularly nice person?

Edited to rant: or if he already had them before the animal cruelty thing why weren't they taken away?

youd be suprised theres a huge black market in America for "exotic" (read stupid) pets.

there used to be a chap in london who owned a lion and used to take it for walks in hyde park.

he bought it from Harrods!

Yeah I know the public safety had to come first, and the delays in safely sedating the animals would have taken time, but its still sad to see 48 dead animals, because of one man. >_<

Maybe the guys who shot the animals could have tracked them until such time as the right people turned up, shooting them dead only if they were approaching an area of people or something. Anything that would have avoided such a large loss in a small area. :(

Yeah, but that lion was then released into the wild, the video on youtube showing them returning to their lion's pride after a year brought a tear to my eye, I never knew lion's were capable of "cuddling"

Seen plenty of animals that didn't ought to be pets, in fact there's a shop not too far from me that sells meerkats, squirrels, hedgehogs... allsorts. I don't agree with it, even some of the zoos these days don't plan enough space in their enclosures for the animals they're keeping.

it was back in the 60's before it became illegal to own such animals.
people dont seem to take into account the fact that these animals will grow

apparently Ohio has one of the most lax rules on animal ownership hence why people have private zoos like the one mentioned on the news.

also you guys are talking about 'Christian The Lion' the one who lived in London..

story here:

Maggies_minder - Was it just one person who killed them all? In that case it makes sense. I do get that the right thing was done to protect people, but its still sad.

i honestly couldnt say, however its not likely is it?

i mean 1 chap on his own would be running all over the gaff, those animals couldve headed in any direction, and gone for "x" many miles...

i highly doubt it was one guy.

I'm confused. If you didn't think it was one person, what were you referring to with this comment?

I think a group of people could have tracked the animals for a short period.

Either way, it didn't happen and its dealt with now.

Its called the "lazy" option :P

Instead of spending money and time plus effort

They decided just to kill them to save time and money.

If they had been living with that gentleman for so long they would be "mildly" tamed.

Its like instead of going into the city to find the man responsible, instead we'll just bomb the hell out of the city until its gone and hopefully the person is dead in the bombing....remind you of something....
