Three holes in total, two which need to be tapped to 5/16" UNC for the screws or studs to hold the breather on and one big one ( about 1" diameter )

The space is limited, the engine is in a buggy. Must the hole be at the top or can it be anywhere on the housing?

Well it makes sense with warm vapours rising and all...

If you had a suction type system linked to the carb you could put it on the side, but you would have to really angle it so that oil splash from the drop gears doesnt flow out through the breather system.

Thanks, it makes sense, but can I simply drill a hole on the top of the housing and fit a pipe? Is the suction system the small pipe on the housing of the air filter?

Yer that would work! maybe take the hose into the rocker cover and then get a pipe from the rocker cover going into the carb. There is actually a connection on the side of the carb for a breather to be attached to. looks like its brass.

When I say the hole what I mean is:

Drill, and then tap the hole and put a pneumatic fixing on to it, then but the hose over the fitting and secure with a Jubilee clip.

Thanks
At the moment I am using the hole for the dipstick as an extra breather, if i dont more oil comes out of the rocker cover breather than usualy, will fitting this breather help with that? The oil rings are still pretty new.

No you can't just drill any hole, The breather on the transfer case needs a 'shield' on the transfer gear side of the case to stop oil going up the hole. If you have not got the blanked casting to drill and fit one, then it'll be very difficult. The breather is there to allow air flow in and out of the crank case.

If you just drill a hole then oil will be thrown through the hole by the transfer gears, and if you connect it to your carb, the vacuum will pull that oil into the carb, and you can imagine the rest...

Will it help to put something like a can in the breather pipe to allow the oil to go back? (without connecting it to the carb)

Put up some photos, it'll give people a better idea. The system works by letting air in via the oil filler and sucking it out of the crankcase (where the blow by fumes are). AS GW says, there's 3 gears spinning in the transfer case so it will be plastered in oil. How about a timing chain cover breather & what's fitted to the fuel pump mounting?

You could fit a remote catch Tank, it'd be like extending the crank case, so it'd need a vent or vac pipe and ideally an oil return.

Easiest is to add a breather on the rocker cover - or get an early cover which HAS a breather.
