While the mini was off the road getting restored i bought a Civic CRX as a run about (and to eventually steal the engine out for mini 2).
Since the minis been back on the road (about 2 months) the honda has sat locked away.
The insurance costs were roughly:
Honda - £700 (3rd party 10k miles)
Mini - £650 (Fully comp 10k miles)
Now with winter approaching rapidly i want to put the mini away for a couple of months (dec-feb ish) to avoid those nasty gritters.
What does everyone else do with their insurance as im sure im not the only one?
Do i...
Insure both - What are the costs like? Is it as much as both added together or much less?
Keep Switching - This means i get stuck on not necessarily the best policy (e.g. the mini is on a jap import policy thanks to the honda until i renew in Jan)
How does no claims work with 2 cars?

You can only use your no claims bonus on one car, need to start from scratch on the 2nd car. I had a lotus elise which i only used in summer and mrs had a company car so i got her to insure the lotus and put me as a named driver and then put it on laid up cover over the winter which was only £12 per month

Not sure it would work for your situation but I insure our 2 daily driver cars on an Admiral Multi-Car policy and so far this has been cheaper than 2 seperate policies and each driver on the policy earns their own no-claims bonus. My classic Mini however is on its own classic policy with another insurance company with an agreed value and low annual mileage.

We currently have two cars insured year round. Our family runabout (Rover 75 Tourer) is insured with Swiftcover, about £370 fully comp including business use, with full and protected no claims discount. The Mini is insured under a classic policy with Footman James, about £120 per year fully comp with an agreed valuation but does not use or build up no claims discount.
Previously we had both on an Admiral Multicar policy using both mine and my wife's no claims bonus but it worked out much more expensive - the best part of £700 iirc.
There are so many variations and permutations that will work that your best bet is going to be to investigate all options and see what works best for you. You do need to be a bit careful as you will now need to SORN the Mini if you're laying it up without insurance, even if it's still taxed.

Thanks guys I think I'll switch for now and weigh up all the options when it comes to renew in January.
What's the deal with "classic" insurance? Is it for second cars only? I.e. I couldn't drive to work in the mini in the summer months?

The first time I owned two cars, I spoke to my insurers at the time and no problem - a second no claims bonus was okay with them due to my exemplary driving record .When I moved on from them, they sent me 2 separate proofs of no claims - one for each car.
Now I have one car with standard insurance and one with a "mirrored" NCD (i.e. a separate policy with a second NCD on it). Both NCDs are protected individually.
I think the trick here is to shop around. Some insurers are kinder than others! I can give you details of my insurers if you want them.
