i have this TIM rev counter,
http://www.minispare...id=33718&title=

ready to wire in, i was planning to use the original wiring in my 94 sprite, as it has the wires needed for a rev counter.

however it has only 2, but the rev counter has 4.
the rev counter has a red, black, green, and white wires...

my electrical knowledge is rubbish, is it worth using those original wires or just starting from scratch?

any pointers?? and please keep it really basic.
cheers,
MM.

What to do is entirely up to you.

I don't know the color codes in the dash of a later model Mini and don't have a wiring diagram for your car. If I did, I would locate the existing wires in your car and tap into them rather than pulling new wires. Since my car is older and there are only 4 wires to deal with I would wire from scratch... but that's just me.
Tach Connections:
Red wire to switched 12V supply on the fuse box.
Black wire to earth (anywhere that is a metal part of the car body).
Green is the sense wire and it goes to the coil (-) terminal (the side of the coil with a wire going to the distributor).
White is for internal lighting. I would splice that into any "hot" part of the dash illumination circuit you can find/access.

ive found two wires which are part of the original loom which would allow a rev counter to be fitted.

(in a 94 sprite)

one is black and white, the other is light green and orange.

could these be used or is it worth starting from scratch and ignoring these?

You will need to confirm wiring by looking at a wiring diagram. Sorry... I don't have one for your car. However, the white/black is typically connected to coil (-) on the other end. That wire would connect to your tach's green wire. The green/orange SHOULD be switched 12V power. You can confirm that with a wiring diagram and/or a volt meter. The switched power would be connected to your tach's red wire. That leaves you tach-white to the dash lighting circuit and tach-black to earth.

Follows Doug's instructions but you should be able to utilise the existing wiring as well

black/white is the coil negative so connects to the green wire

and light green/orange is 12v ignition feed so connect to the red wire

the the black wire goes anywhere metal, and the white wire from the rev counter gets connected into the lighting?

Black to anywhere metal that is connected to the main body of the car (earth ground). White wire to somewhere in the lighting circuit so the light will only be on (and will be dimable) when the other instrument lights are turned on.
