I am finally getting around to building a new 1330 engine and have been wondering whether its worth having my conrods lightened, balanced and shot peened? or whether just to use standard rods with ARP bolts?

what are people opinions?

if i were to go for it, who should i go to, to have them done?

cheers

adam

Force racing, rods are probable the most important item to lighten.

Your question is kind of like: "Should I paint the house or build a new fence?". It really comes down to what you want, what you are trying to do, and what your expectations are. I wouldn't equate lightened, shot-peened rods with std. rods and ARP fasteners.

If you are going to be using this engine primarily on the street, lightening and shot-peening may be just an extra expense. Likewise with the ARP fasteners. I remember that Mini Spares has some performance fasteners that cost less than ARP. If on the other hand you plan to build a performance engine and use it at high revs frequently, I would do both (lightened (and balanced) rods and ARP fasteners). Again, what to do is largely influenced by how you plan on using the car/engine.
