so i was driving home from work and my car suddenly lost power and i managed to turn down a road like a misfire but no juddering i started in third and went down to second then first and then it cut out no way of increasing revs.

so i let it sit for a minute or two and then tried to drive it again it started straight away i drove it maybe 30 yards and it lost power and cut out. so i arranged my dad to tow me home.

before he arrived i checked all the ht leads the points, the dissy cap, the connections to the coil and at the fuse box (ballasted) all seemed in perfect order. so checked the oil was at the correct level and beautifully clean as it has had a service this week plugs, oil, oil filter and coolant.

so towed it home and it will idle and drive for max 20 to 30 seconds and the power will die and cut out

so if i start it starts and idles and runs great and then will cut out completely

i will be cracking on with diagnosing it tomorrow so would love to know where you think i should start but any advice is appreciated

thanks jordan

Give the ignition a once over, never hurts.

It does sound like fuel starvation though.

and dose this mean it could have a blockage at any point from the fuel tank to the carb ?

Maybe.

I had a deluge of issues with my carb (popping, suges of power) and the easiest way to be sure (probably because I'm not as experienced as others here) was to swap over parts from a working car. Basically after a lot of mis diagnosis I swapped a carb from another motor and found the problem. My diagnosis skills will get better and this method is a little bit like what a modern garage would do but if you have access to someone elses car then it can help....

Note, there are many posts on here about diagnosing fueling issues or air leaks...use google to search instead of the search facility. Generally the first place to look though is at the ignition. If okay then check thay fuel flows and air leaks.

right i have just ran to car for 15 mins and it runs perfectly and revs up reaches running temp after 5 mins but the after the 15 mins or so will just cut out this is just at idle so i think the fuel system is fine but no ruling it out .

i left it for a few mins started it again and did exactly the same i dont know if its ignition or fuel or something else the carb that is on there is a hif38 which i did a full rebuild on about 3000 miles ago i have a couple of knackered hs4s but im not sure if it is the problem ...

i have had a search and cant find a senario that is the same as mine

cheers for the replies

right i have tried a few things today

was only starting for as long as 20 seconds this morning

and then refused to start

i took the cap of the tank to see if it was causing a vacuum but made no difference
i took the top of the carb to check was all free and un blocked
too the bottom for the carb of float moved fine and could blow through the jet fine
the fuel filter before the carb is filling up and the float bowl was full
when turning over can smell fuel so am guessing fuel is reaching engine

really at a stump now anyone help me out ?
