After drowning out my Vitara off roader at an event a few weeks ago I have had her off the road for a while whilst I dried it out and replaced oil, cleaned plugs, alternator and starter etc. Two weeks ago I got the engine running and drove it about the yard to check all wes well which thankfully it was.It then stood on axle stansd for a week untill I had time to change the CV joints which I have done today.

The problem is now that I cant select any gears. With the engine running no gears can be selected at all, there is pressure on the pedal, the cable is in tact and I have nicked up the adjuster so that all is tight. The arm at the end of the cable moves when the clutch is depressed and the gearbox is full of oil.

I have tried starting the car in gear and driving it about but once moving you can knock her into neutral but then cant select anything. Im guessing that the clutch is not dis engaging and therefore there is a problem with the relaese bearing but this will mean the whole transmission coming out in order to check. What I cant undrstand is why it drove the other week and has now totally siezed after standing for 10 days. Im hoping that there might be a logical explanation or solution that wont involve removing the box. Any help would be gratefully recieved, thanks in advance,

Dan.

Anyone know anything about Vitaras?

It's possible that the wet clutch swelled up and now that it's dried out it has shrunk and bonded itself to the flywheel, or any number of things could be rusted or have had the grease washed out of them but this is the one area where knowledge of Mini's doesn't really transfer to other cars as Mini's are pretty unique in the clutch department. If it is seized then it may release if you just jump on the pedal but then that could break things.

Can you select all the gears when the car is not running? My mini was like this when i change the engine and it was the cluch that had seized. So i put it in first and started it then drove round the car park with my foot on the cluch and then accelerating and breaking. THen all off a sudden the engine reved but i didnt accelerate ( ie the clutch was freed) and all works fine now. I can see that you would break anything giving that a go and it might free it.

will say its possible the clutch plate has bonded itself to the flywheel as already said so plonk it in gear press the clutch and rock it back and fourth to try and get it to break the rust bond
