chaps, after a massive amount of cocking about with what I thought was a fan belt issue here: http://www.theminifo...l=&fromsearch=1
I have found that its the alternator screeching under load. it seems that when it screeches, it will also resist turning and then wear the belt badly.
anyway, I got it running great yesterday during the day, then went out in the night, started it up and when I turned the lights on, the screeching all started again.. then I sat there for a while turning the lights on [screech] and off [silent] - so im pretty certain its the alternator.

can these be serviced ? if they can ill whip it out and get it done.. if not, the minispares alternator is cheap enough http://www.minispare...44&prod_id=2255
but I need to get running asap for the VIC test :(

thanks.

J.

Personally I'd just stick a new alternator on it, you'd probably find one cheaper at a motorfactor.

I hate to say it but is cheaper to replace than refurb one..

Sometimes it can be the rectifier in the alternator and a diode can be replaced. There is no harm in having a look and see if anything obvious is burnt out. If so a new one can be soldered in for pennies. It really depends on your time and if the car needs to be back on the road ASAP.

Screeching suggests worn belt and/or worn pulley. Tighten the belt! Maybe fit a new pulley - I doubt there is anything seriously wrong with the alternator itself. - but worth checking if the bearings feel smooth by removing the belt and feeling for play. Are the pulleys all dead in line ??
