Right, got one of them bulky round air filter things on my 998 - want to get rid of that to make it look better and also improve performance if I can.

What can be the best thing to do to the filter to make it better?

Keep the box and that's good enough? K+N filter cone? Pancake?

Budget would be 25 quid as it's only a small thing to be honest, cheers! ;D

The standard airbox is more than adequate for a pretty much standard engine

If you put on a cone/pancake then you will need to adjust your carb aswell so more monies if you take it somewhere, alot of people throw a stage 1 kit on and leave it as it is, anything that messes around with the airflow needs work on afterwards, you can get away with it just changing the element but still a good idea to take it somewhere to make sure its running fine, never hurts

Not 100% as I'm on a phone and its hard to check. This came up only last week. I have both.

The cone can easily bash against the bulk head if the engine steadies are anything but perfect and they are a pain to get on and off. Also you get a lot more noise in the car as the filter is just behind a hole that goes into the seating area.

The standard air box is good enough (no need for holes) and just fit a K&N like, or as, per the link above.

I agree it doesn't look as cool but I think it is better.

Nice one, cheers mate.

So just replace the air filter with a k+n one and I should be rockin'?

That's what I would do as I have both setups. Oh, my plastic filter box (mid eighties) had the rubber washer missing that seals the outlet to the carb.

Vital else unfiltered air will leak in.

They are available at minispares.

It will be fine and it will not be the performance bottleneck.

Yer so what you want to do is put the filter element replacement in, but then to get some real performance (kinda) increase you will want to modify the air box with some holes

What will those holes do exactly? redirect the 'dirty' air away?

Below is a tech reply to this thread from Liirge(he can't reply himself as he has a 24 hour posting ban). If you want further info pls PM Him

"They are before the filter the holes sit out side of the filter within the casing, they provide more airflow to the box and thus the engine won't be struggling to get the required amount of air, not that it was before it just makes it easier. There are also holes drilled to the side of the box facing forwards I believe 4 is a good number, and I'm sure that someone else will give you the optimum size. "
