Right, so I'm at uni at the moment, and am thus poor. I'd like to listen to music in my room, at a better sound quality than my laptop.

At home I have a lot of tools, MDF, and a few car speakers.

What would I need to make these speaker play songs from my iPod? Obviously I'd need an inverter, but what would I need to turn the signal from my iPod into one that would work through my car speakers, some kind of amplifier?

Any help appreciated, Paul.

One of them, plugs into 12v but I would just get a 230v adaptor for the 12v socket if I was you. Then your speakers plug straight in AND you get remote control!

If you need links to the other bits you need just ask

I have a briefcase that has a 12v scooter battery in so I have mobile music on the go but plugs into the mains just as easily

Nice one, cheers!

I've got an inverter at home but I think it was intended for battery charging, not sure if it'll give out enough power...

You can always use a PC ATX PSU with a little modding...

You can pick up big 700watt (40amps on the 12v rails) units for under £20!

Nice one guys! I've got an old PC in the garage at home too, so I think I'll raid that of it's inverter.

Shall keep you all updated on how it works out

Haha, there might well be one yet!

Half tempted to get one of those amps for the mini really, it makes the radio a bit obselete...

Better way to do it is to just get a home amplifier, used ones are very cheap on gumtree and in papers etc... car speakers usually have a higher wattage but the amplifier does exactly the same thing, a speaker is a speaker :)

oops NOPE, Most home amps can only power down to 8 ohm loads (speakers) but most car audio speakers are 4 or sometimes 2ohms. If you load an amp too low it will at best drop in to protection or at worst overheat and be damaged.

Beat me to it again. If you want to use car speakers on a home theatre amp then you need to wire them for 8 ohms, as in 2 x 4ohm speakers in series, on each channel (R & L)
